The Philomath High School softball team opened up this week’s three-game home stand with a 19-2 loss to Sweet Home.
The Warriors, which had 18 errors in the loss, fall to 3-15 overall and 2-7 in the Oregon West Conference.
Sweet Home (6-10, 5-5) got the scoring started in the second inning with four runs and increased its lead to 5-0 in the third.
In the bottom half of the third, Philomath pushed across two runs thanks to back-to-back triples by senior Mia Bennett and freshman Briahna Ledbetter. Sophomore Hannah Bennett later hit a two-out single to plate Ledbetter.
Sweet Home put up nine runs in the fourth to pull out of reach. Another five runs came across for the visitors in the fifth.
Philomath scored its final run in the fifth. Ledbetter reached on an error, moved to second on a Janae Traglia single, advanced on a ground-ball out by Junior Ahnika Tryon and scored on a ball put in play by Hannah Bennett.
Mia Bennett went 2 for 2, Hannah Bennett drove in two runs and Ledbetter scored two runs. In the circle, Tryon threw four innings and allowed five hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Incredibly, 14 runs were scored with Tryon pitching but none were earned because of all of the errors. Senior Adrianna Hunter threw the fifth inning.
Senior Brooke Burke, senior Kelsie Rush and sophomore Jacelyn Fairchild each had two hits. Burke hit a solo home run in the fifth. At pitcher, senior Makayla Guthrie threw a complete-game six-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.
Philomath will host North Marion Wednesday and Cascade Thursday with both of those games scheduled for 4:30 p.m. starts.
