Philomath High’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players and No. 1 doubles team posted victories Thursday in a 5-3 girls tennis loss at Stayton.

Warriors senior Adele Beckstead defeated Eagles senior Laina Atiyeh, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 singles match and junior Lucy King had a slow start but pulled out a No 2 singles victory over senior Lorelei Ritchie, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Philomath juniors Lucie Oster and Maggie King won a competitive match over Stayton seniors Kadence Kuiken and Audrey Ritchie, 7-5, 6-4.

Stayton had the upper hand in the other five matches, however, with straight-set victories that led to the team win.

For the boys, sophomore Nate Houck posted the team’s lone victory with a 6-1, 6-3 No. 2 singles win over Blanchet Catholic sophomore Trenton Harper in a home Wednesday match. Blanchet won the match, 5-1.

The next afternoon, Philomath was on the home court again and lost 6-0 to Stayton. The most competitive match occurred at No. 1 singles with Warriors junior Lane Schell surprising Stayton senior Hyatt Dirkx in the first set but ultimately falling by a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Philomath’s tennis teams are scheduled to next play on Tuesday against Molalla — the boys at home and the girls on the road.
