Stayton scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull off a 4-3 victory over Philomath Monday in an Oregon West Conference baseball matchup.
With one out and base runners at second and third, the Eagles won the game on a suicide squeeze. Sophomore Eli Brown executed the bunt to the third base side while sophomore Cody Leming sprinted home. Philomath couldn’t get the throw to the plate in time and Stayton celebrated.
The Warriors (4-2) will face Stayton (3-2) again on Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Stephenson Field.
Philomath opened the game on a high note with junior Cameron Ordway smacking a line-drive trip to center field. Two batters later, senior Adam Hernandez drove him in on a single. Hernandez later scored on a passed ball after advancing to third on a single by sophomore Ty May.
Stayton came right back and tied the game in a similar fashion with one run scored on a hit and the other on a passed ball.
Philomath took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning. With two outs, senior Chase Beardsley hit a ground ball toward second and Hernandez scored to put Philomath on top.
Starting pitcher Skylar Brolin had another strong outing for the Warriors with 11 strikeouts against just two walks, five hits and two earned runs. Brolin and the defense allowed the Eagles nothing after the first inning until the home team’s comeback in the seventh.
Philomath had seven hits in the game. Ordway and Hernandez both went 2 for 3 and May was 2 for 4.
