Retiring flag at 2021 flag-placement ceremony

A ceremony in recognition of Armed Forces Day and Peace Officers Memorial Day that also serves as a flag-placement event preceding Memorial Day will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Mount Union Cemetery in Philomath.

Organizers invite the community to attend the event, which will be presented by local residents with the participation of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Posse, Oregon State Air Force ROTC, Oregon Army National Guard and Mount Union Cemetery Association.

The event will include special recognition of 1st Lt. Jimmy Badley, an Oregon State University ROTC graduate who went on to become a pilot and was shot down over North Vietnam in 1968. Organizer Eric Niemann said members of the Badley family are planning to attend on Saturday.

Following the ceremony, small groups will place flags on the grave sites of veterans. Mount Union Cemetery is the resting place for more than 200 veterans. In addition, wreaths will be presented in honor of active members of the armed forces and peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on Sunday, May 15 and the official date for Armed Forces Day this year will be Saturday, May 21. Memorial Day will be May 30.
