An ultralight aircraft crashed into the Willamette River south of Corvallis in the Peoria area, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office reported Saturday.

The law-enforcement agency said it was notified of the crash at 7 a.m. Saturday and has been working the initial phase of the investigation with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said at around 12:30 p.m. that it was not known how many occupants were on board the aircraft.

“We ask the public to stay clear of the area as first responders continue the investigation and assess the scene for potential hazards to boaters/paddlers,” BCSO said in a release.

The agency said further details were not immediately available but expected to provide updates as investigators learn more about what happened.
