Driver, 26, crashed in Chevy Astro van head-on into tree

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with new information.

A 26-year-old California man lost his life Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Fern Road, Benton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. David Iverson reported.

Emergency responders were dispatched at about 7:08 a.m. to the scene of the crash, which occurred on Powder House Road’s northern intersection with Fern Road. Iverson said that upon arrival, responders found the driver, identified as Mathew Aleksander Jardini, of Templeton, California, deceased. He was the only occupant in the vehicle, which Iverson said was a white 2000 Chevrolet Astro van.

Fern Road curves at that location but despite a cold spell covering the region, Iverson said there was no ice present on the road. The Benton County Crash Team determined that Jardini was traveling west on Fern Road and failed to negotiate the curve, crashing head-on into a tree.

The highway was closed for approximately three hours.

A notification was made to Jardini’s family Wednesday afternoon by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting at the scene were the Philomath Police Department and Philomath Fire & Rescue, which responded from Station 201 with a fire engine and one duty officer.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Iverson at 541-766-0139.
