Philomath High School’s dance team took first place in one category and was runner-up in two others last weekend at the annual Dancing With the Stars competition.

The Feb. 10 event featured categories for hip-hop, jazz, pom, show and traditional.

In the competitive 1A through 5A hip-hop category, West Albany took first place with a 77.06 team score and Philomath’s Shining Stars squad was second at 76.50. The Shining Stars won the 1A through 4A jazz competition with a 66.72 score, beating out Grant Union’s 58.22. In the 1A through 4A traditional category, Marshfield took first at 77.39 and Philomath was the runner-up at 64.56.

Philomath High’s roster includes seniors Kaylie Blake, Alexa Eckhold, Jadyn McMullen and Abigail Workman, junior Elizabeth Burriel, sophomores Astrid Cropp, Ginnah Hopper and Adriana Nanoski and freshman Katherine Burriel. Stefanie Larson is the head coach and Michelle Park serves as an assistant.

Other winners included Sheldon in 5A-6A jazz (83.50) and 5A-6A pom (82.67), South Medford in 6A hip-hop (86.33), Marshfield in 1A-4A pom (75.89), West Albany in 5A-6A traditional (79.94) and North Eugene in show (67.78). 

In addition to those teams, also participating were Centennial, Corvallis and Mountain View. Two local youth dance teams — Pure Energy and Velocity — also performed. Also, Blake and McMullen performed their all-state routine.

The dance and drill teams are working up to the state championships, scheduled for March 15-16 at Salem Pavilion.
