A correction was made at 2:10 p.m. Dec. 2, 2023: An earlier version of this article reported that a passenger in the vehicle had been transported to the hospital based on a report received from the responding agency. However, the vehicle's only occupant was the driver.

This story was updated at 11:12 a.m. Dec. 6, 2023 with additional details from the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

A Hyundai Sonata rolled over on Highway 20 about 2 miles west of Philomath Friday morning with its driver transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center to be evaluated for injuries, Philomath Fire and Rescue reported.

The crash occurred just west of Lone Star Road with emergency responders dispatched to the scene at 10:53 a.m. Dec. 1.

“A single female … was hung up on her seatbelt, upside down in the vehicle, and was able to be freed,” said Philomath Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief and Public Information Officer Rich Saalsaa, referring to the driver, the vehicle’s lone occupant.

The driver, a 44-year-old Newport woman, was assessed on scene for injuries and then transported to the hospital via Corvallis Fire Department ambulance for further evaluation.

Saalsaa said Highway 20 was closed in both directions for about 20 minutes during the incident.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation determined that the vehicle hydroplaned on the highway’s wet surface and the driver overcorrected.

According to BCSO’s report, the vehicle “hit an embankment and rolled around three times before coming to a final rest on its top.”

Philomath Fire and Rescue sent an engine crew of three and two chief officers to the scene with Fire Chief Chancy Ferguson serving as incident commander. The Philomath Police Department assisted and the Oregon Department of Transportation handled traffic control.
