Republic Services submitted a revised application to Benton County for a conditional-use permit to expand the Coffin Butte Landfill, both the county and company announced in separate press releases.
An earlier version of the application, submitted July 19, did not make it through the Benton County Planning Department’s “completeness check” — a process that ensures all required and requested information had been included along with necessary supporting documents.
“The county will once again utilize the expertise of an outside consultant for technical support to ensure all aspects of the application are thoroughly reviewed,” Benton County officials said.
Republic Services believes the revised application addresses the county’s questions.
“It includes an expanded review of adjacent properties and includes additional information on odor monitoring, visual impacts and potential for noise,” the company said in its press release. “The revised application includes updated exhibits and proposes a set of conditions of approval.”
The county said that it expects to utilize the full 30 days allowed to provide a response to Republic Services based on the timing of the filing — just before a general election and a possible labor strike.
Republic Services said it is requesting an expansion that will allow the landfill to place waste on approximately 70 acres of land south of Coffin Butte Road.
“The expansion request is 50% smaller than what was proposed in 2021 and will add six years of life to the landfill,” the company wrote. “The proposal leaves Coffin Butte Road intact and includes $650,000 worth of improvements to the thoroughfare, including adding a left turn lane for disposal trucks and bike lanes in both directions.”
Company officials said the smaller expansion size and the Coffin Butte Road improvements were a direct result of community and stakeholder feedback.
If the county deems the application complete, the review process will begin and must be completed within 150 days.
The full application can be viewed online.
