The Benton County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday pulled the remains of a 36-year-old Eugene man who had gone missing in May from the Willamette River, the law enforcement agency reported.

Justin Grossman had reportedly been camping on an island in the Willamette River and using a canoe to get on and off the island when the boat capsized, according to information provided by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescuers from Eugene/Springfield Fire and LCSO responded to a report of capsized canoe in the river on May 7. Searchers saturated the area, the report states, but were unable to find the man.

A woman recreating in a canoe found the body in an area about one mile north of McCartney Park near Harrisburg. BCSO responded and after recovering his body, was able to make the identification.
