Young hunters in the Philomath area will have the opportunity to complete their required hunter’s education training at a special field day event on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The Oregon Hunter’s Education Field Day, sponsored by the Philomath Police Department and Philomath Youth Activities Club, will run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at 4702 Bellfountain Road, followed by classroom work at PYAC, which is located at 421 S. 19th St.

The hands-on training is designed for youth who have completed the online hunter’s education course through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The field day provides practical experience and reinforcement of key safety concepts.

Participants will learn essential skills including understanding different firearm actions, proper loading and unloading techniques with ammunition selection, practicing safe muzzle control, managing firearm safety mechanisms and applying fundamental safety rules. The program also includes a trail walk where students will identify various species while practicing ethical hunting scenarios.

Students must bring either a printed certificate of completion from the online course or a completed home study workbook from ODFW to participate in the field day event.

Registration is required online through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
