The Philomath Youth Activities Club’s Safety Town program will run Aug. 21-25, the organization announced.
Registration is currently underway with the form available on the PYAC website. Organizers are asking that the registration form be turned in by May 26. The fee, which includes a T-shirt, is $50 per child. Contact PYAC for scholarship information.
The summer program targets Philomath School District children who will be entering kindergarten this fall and takes place at Clemens Primary School. Each day’s activities run from 9:30 a.m.-noon. A graduation ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the last day.
Under the guidance of a teacher, law-enforcement officer and teen instructors, children are introduced to safety concepts. They will practice being safe pedestrians and drivers of pedal cars in a miniature town. Songs, art projects, videos, a bus field trip and various presentations complete the experience.
Along with bike and pedestrian safety, other topics covered include interaction with strangers, and safety involving pets, guns, playgrounds, boats and water, and fire.
The curriculum is provided by the National Safety Town Center and adapted for the local area.
