FATAL CRASHES
MONDAY, FEB. 19
• 4:16 a.m. — Troopers responded to a five-vehicle crash on Highway 97 about 4 miles south of Culver in Jefferson County that claimed the life of Jose Refugio Gamboa-Lupercio, 57, of Redmond. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated two commercial vehicles were headed south on icy roads when the trailing truck struck the rear end of the lead truck. The collision caused the lead truck’s trailer to slide sideways into the northbound lanes. A red Toyota Tacoma driven by a 55-year-old Terrebonne man and a white Toyota Tacoma driven by a 52-year-old Terrebonne man both headed north struck the sliding trailer. A GMC Sierra driven by a 60-year-old Terrebonne man then struck both Toyota Tacomas as well. Gamboa-Lupercio, a rear passenger in the red Tacoma, was declared deceased at the scene. The red Tacoma’s driver and a front passenger, a 62-year-old Redmond man, suffered injuries and were transported to a hospital. The operators of the commercial vehicles, a 64-year-old Hood River man and a 41-year-old Portland man, were reportedly not injured. The drivers of the white Tacoma and the Sierra were reportedly not injured. Roadway conditions and speed were determined to be factors that contributed to the crash.
