FATAL CRASHES

TUESDAY, DEC. 19

• 12:19 a.m. — Troopers responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision on Highway 97 near Redmond that took the life of Corey Lee Smith, 52, of Warm Springs. OSP’s preliminary investigation revealed that Deschutes County 911 had received a call of a person sitting in the median of an unlighted portion of Highway 97 near the Northeast Maple Avenue overpass. A short time later, Smith was in the right northbound lane of the highway when he was struck by a Ford F-150 driven by a 48-year-old Redmond man. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ford’s driver and a passenger were not injured.

• 7:04 a.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near Nyssa that took the life of Tad Stringam, 48, of Prineville. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a Toyota Tundra driven by Stringam was headed east across the Nyssa Snake River Bridge when it slid into the westbound lane. A commercial vehicle driven by a 64-year-old Heyburn, Idaho, man was traveling west across the bridge at the time and swerved in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the collision. Stringam was ejected in the collision and was found deceased next to the Toyota. A 48-year-old female passenger in the Toyota was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

• 7:45 a.m. — Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 78 about 11 miles southeast of Burns that took the life of Gwendallen Koepke, 19, of Princeton. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a Ford Ranger driven by Koepke was headed west on Highway 78 when it hit the shoulder and rolled multiple times, coming to rest on its top. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the rollover. Patches of ice were in the area to suggest that road conditions may have been a contributing factor. Koepke was transported to a local hospital where she died of her injuries and was declared deceased.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 20

• 11:16 a.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 at the Astoria-Megler Bridge that took the life of Jean Ormiston, 81, of Ocean Park, Washington. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Ormiston was headed south and crossed the centerline for unknown reasons. A northbound Ford Van driven by a 63-year-old Ilwaco, Washington, man collided head-on with the Acura. Ormiston was declared deceased at the scene. Two juvenile passengers in the Acura were transported to a local hospital, one with major injuries. The driver of the Ford and a 62-year-old male passenger were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the crash remained under investigation but it is known that there was heavy fog reducing visibility and may have been a contributing factor.
