Pioneer Connect, the Philomath-based telecommunications cooperative, finalized its acquisition Tuesday of Monroe Telephone Co., extending its fiber, DSL and telephone network into the Monroe area.

Monroe Telephone has operated in the community since 1912 when it was established as a mutual association providing telephone and telegraph service. The company’s service territory sits adjacent to Pioneer Connect’s existing footprint.

Pioneer Connect General Manager James Byerley said the acquisition builds on what Monroe Telephone has already established in the community.

“We’re committed to maintaining the level of service their customers expect while introducing additional capabilities and long-term investments in the network,” Byerley said through a press release.

David Mills, owner of Monroe Telephone, said the two companies have a long history of working together.

“We feel Pioneer is the ideal partner to lead Monroe Telephone into its next chapter,” Mills said, adding that many Pioneer Connect employees already have ties to the Monroe area.

Pioneer Connect said Monroe customers will gain access to its expanding fiber-optic network as buildout continues across the newly combined service area, along with upgraded customer support tools. The company said it will work with the existing Monroe Telephone team to manage the transition, with current customers continuing to receive familiar local service in the near term.

Pioneer Connect is a member-owned cooperative serving rural and small-town communities across Oregon, with a stated focus on expanding broadband access and modernizing infrastructure in underserved areas.
