A 78-year-old Corvallis woman riding her bicycle on Highway 34 south and west of Philomath lost her life Sunday morning when hit by a pickup near the highway’s intersection with Decker Road, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene — located about 6 miles outside of Philomath — at 10:15 a.m. The bicyclist, Sherry Elizabeth Sisson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witness statements, the bicyclist was traveling west and attempted to turn across the highway and onto Decker Road just as the westbound pickup, pulling a trailer and driven by a 61-year-old Albany man, was attempting to make the pass.

A Philomath Police Department officer was the first to arrive on scene and attempted to revive the woman but she could not be saved with fatal injuries.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team is investigating the incident. Besides BCSO and Philomath police, the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted with the investigation. Philomath Fire & Rescue also responded and assisted with traffic control until ODOT’s arrival at the scene.

The highway was closed for a period of time on Sunday.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact BCSO Sgt. David Iverson at 541-766-6858.
