The Philomath High School volleyball team defeated a Class 5A opponent but lost to three other schools Saturday at the Mt. Hood Invitational in Gresham.
The Warriors (7-6) will get back into Oregon West Conference play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Stayton. Both Philomath and Stayton enter the match with 3-1 records in league play. Later in the week, the Warriors will head to conference leader Cascade.
The all-day Saturday event at Barlow High School included four best-of-three matches for a dozen teams. Ridgeview (7-8) took a win in two sets over Philomath, 25-20, 25-11, in a 9:15 a.m. match. The Ravens, based in Redmond, play in the 5A Intermountain Conference and have won six of their last seven.
The Warriors then faced The Dalles, a fellow 4A school in a late-morning match that went the full three sets. The Riverhawks (9-6), out of the Tri-Valley Conference, got the win in a close one, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10.
Class 6A Barlow followed for Philomath and the host Bruins were winners by a margin of 25-18, 25-18. Barlow (11-4) plays in the 6A Mt. Hood Conference and swept all four of its matches in the tournament.
The Warriors salvaged one victory at the event with a 25-7, 25-17 late-afternoon final over McKay. The Royal Scots (0-16), out of Salem, play in the 5A Mid-Willamette Conference.
Behind Barlow’s 4-0 performance, Crook County, Ridgeview, Santiam Christian and Sandy each finished 3-1 at the tournament. Estacada, Gresham and The Dalles each finished 2-2. Central and Philomath were 1-3 with McKay and St. Helens at 0-4.
