The Philomath High School boys and girls tennis teams opened their respective seasons on Tuesday with impressive victories over Madras.
Playing at home on the new PHS courts, the girls took a 7-1 win over the White Buffaloes. In the No. 1 slot, Bailey Bell took down her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Noel Lundeen at No. 2 won handily by a 6-1, 6-1 score. And at No. 3, Sierra Johnson was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over her opponent. Dani Carlisle was entered at No. 4 singles and she won by default with Madra unable to put a player on the court.
In doubles, Chloe Jurva and Atira Fairbanks competed in the No. 1 position and won easily, 6-1, 6-2. Lily Schell and K Bacho were 6-1, 6-2 winners over their competition at No. 2. Madras took its only win at No. 3 doubles over Nadia Durski and Elise Reese. Philomath won by default at No. 4 — Megan Reese and Lorelei Schell were entered for the Warriors.
The boys faced off against Madras on the road and rolled to an 8-0 victory. Philomath won the six matches that materialized in straight sets with the other wins by default.
The most competitive match appeared to be at No. 2 singles where Philomath’s Andrew Leonard defeated his opponent, 7-5, 6-1. At No. 1, Dawson Beckstead was a winner, 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 3, Mark Grimmer defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Madras did not have an entrant at No. 4 singles at PHS was awarded the win.
Nick Stucki and Dylan Bell teamed up at No. 1 doubles and won 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 2 slot, Judah Bacho and Teddy Benbow were 6-1, 6-0 winners. At No. 3, Jace Barrett and Noah Curtis took a 6-2, 6-2 win. Gradin Fairbanks and Tomas Harris were awarded a win by default at No. 4.
Philomath will make its home debut on the new courts at 4 p.m. Thursday against Estacada. On the same day and time, the girls will compete at Estacada.
