The Philomath High School boys and girls tennis teams made their annual trip to the Coos Bay area Thursday with doubleheader matches against Marshfield and North Bend.
For the girls, North Bend won 6-2 and Marshfield edged the Warriors, 5-3. The boys fell to Marshfield 5-1. Results for a match against North Bend were not available.
In the most competitive matchup of the afternoon, junior Lucie Oster at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-3), sophomore Lucy Thomas at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-3) and juniors Logan Cook and Lacey Bacho at No. 3 doubles (6-0, 7-5) were winners for Philomath in the girls’ loss to Marshfield.
Three matches went to a third-set tiebreaker (a single game to 10 points) and Marshfield pulled out victories in all three. At No. 1 singles, junior Lucy King lost to Marshfield’s Gwyn Button, 3-6, 6-1 and 1-0 (10-8). In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomore Clara Neville and junior Maggie King lost to Marshfield’s Reanna Mathias and Mallory Edd, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). And at No. 4 doubles, freshman Bethany Cannon and Bella Nuñez came up short against Azura Beckett and Olivia Hoffman, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Philomath played without its No. 1 singles player, senior Adele Beckstead.
Against North Bend, freshman Ella Hammonds posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and Cannon and Nuñez were 6-1, 6-1 winners over their opponents.
In the boys’ competitions, Philomath lost 7-1 to Marshfield in its first match of the afternoon. Junior Lane Schell pulled out a win at No. 1 singles with a 2-6, 6-5, 1-0 victory over Marshfield’s Blake Powell.
Results for the North Bend match were not immediately available.
Philomath is scheduled to play Monday against Woodburn — the girls at home and the boys on the road. The action begins at 4 p.m. at both venues.
