The Philomath High boys and girls tennis teams opened district play on Monday at separate sites and advanced most of their players past the first day.

Playing at Madras, all four of Philomath High’s doubles teams won on Day 1 of districts to remain alive in the championship bracket. Atira Fairbanks and Chloe Jurva, seeded second, moved on along with the teams of K Bacho and Lily Schell, Loreli Schell and Nadia Durski, and Megan and Elise Reese.

Top-seeded Bailey Bell, a freshman, moved into the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Sierra Johnson also defeated her opponent in the first round by a 6-0, 6-0 count to move on. Elsewhere in singles, Noel Lundeen lost her first match but won twice in the consolation rounds to move into the semifinals. Daniella Carlisle lost in both of her matches.

The boys played at Black Butte Ranch near Sisters and saw a lot of success.

Senior Judah Bacho and junior Mark Grimmer surprised the fifth-seeded team from North Marion with a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the first round. Senior Noah Curtis and senior Jace Barrett lost in the championship bracket and received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket. Freshman Gradin Fairbanks and sophomore Ian Alba also lost their first match and in the consolation bracket, took an 8-3 win.

The top-seeded doubles team of Dylan Bell, junior, and Nick Stucki, senior, received a bye in the second round and did not play Monday.

In singles, third-seeded Dawson Beckstead, sophomore, defeated freshman Theo Miller of Madras, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Andrew Leonard advanced with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Woodburn junior Joaquin Lopez. Sophomore Teddy Benbow downed Molalla freshman Lucas Berreth, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Tomas Harris lost in the championship bracket and then dropped a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker in his consolation match.

Both teams resume district play on Thursday and Friday at Black Butte Ranch. Qualifiers will advance to a state tournament that has been organized for May 17-18.
