The Philomath High School softball team lost a pair of games Tuesday at the North Medford Spring Break Tournament, 13-4 to Cascade Christian and 10-0 to Hoopa Valley, California.

In the team’s first game against Cascade Christian, the Warriors fell into an 8-0 hole through the first two innings before breaking through in the third. Juniors Zoee Howard and Janae Traglia both scored on wild pitches to get the Warriors on the scoreboard.

Philomath added two more runs in the fourth inning. Freshman Riley Mason singled to left field to bring in freshman Haley King, who had walked earlier in the inning. Howard then scored the team’s fourth run on a grounder put in play by junior Lilia Leman.

The game ended after six innings with Cascade Christian turning a double play.

Traglia, Mason and junior Kaylie Kohler hit singles for PHS.

Philomath then battled Hoopa Valley, California, a small school located on a reservation of the same name about 60 miles northwest of Eureka. The Warriors had originally been scheduled to face Amity.

The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning when Hoopa Valley broke through for five runs. The opponent then added another five runs in the sixth. The game ended on a three-run homer by senior Ava Jackson.

Philomath had two hits in the game — a single by Kohler in the first and a single by Howard in the second. The Warriors defense had two double plays.

Junior Laighla Hockema pitched complete games against both teams for the Warriors.

Philomath (0-6) will next play on April 2 at home against Gladstone.
