The Philomath High School softball team dropped a 15-0 game Wednesday at Cascade, one of the Oregon West Conference’s co-leaders early this season.

The Cougars (9-1 overall, 2-0 league) scored four runs in the first and added six more in the third and five in the fifth to end it on the 15-run mercy rule.

Philomath (0-11, 0-2) threatened to get on the scoreboard in the fourth. Junior Kaylie Kohler singled to left field with one out but was forced out at second when sophomore Emma May hit a grounder to third base, which was ruled as a single. The inning ended on a fly out to left field.

Junior Zoee Howard had the team’s other hit with a single in the second inning.

Junior Laighla Hockema threw three innings and freshman Haley King entered the circle for the fourth.

Freshmen Katilyn Webb and Haylee Kastl each had two hits for the Cougars. Kastl also had a home run and drove in three runs.

Philomath is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Stayton, which like the Cougars is off to a 2-0 start in league play.
