The Philomath High School girls basketball team won the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament title on Saturday in Coos Bay with a 38-31 victory in the championship game over previously unbeaten Class 5A Crook County.
The Warriors (5-1) shot out to a 10-3 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of 3-pointers from senior Reagan Larson and a couple of hoops by senior Sage Kramer. By halftime, however, the Cowboys had pulled back to within 14-12.
The two teams were even in the third quarter but Philomath had momentum in the fourth. Junior Abigail Brown came up big over the final 8 minutes by scoring all nine of the points she had in the game. Brown scored three hoops and hit 3 of 6 free throws in the fourth.
Larson also had another 3-pointer and a couple of free throws in the final quarter and finished with 11 in the game. Kramer scored two in the fourth and had a game-high 13 points.
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line with Philomath making 6 of 17 (35.3%) and Crook County hitting 5 of 13 (38.5%).
Junior Katelynn Weaver scored 10 to lead the Cowboys.
Crook County entered the game on a seven-game winning streak to open the season. The Cowboys had defeated North Bend (56-38) and Redmond (54-37) to reach the tournament finale while Philomath beat Hidden Valley (43-35) and Junction City (49-38).
The Warriors will play at home on Tuesday against Hidden Valley with the tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
