PHS girls blank Sweet Home with Woodburn rematch looming

The Philomath High School girls soccer team can now turn its attention to Woodburn. After taking care of business on Tuesday afternoon in an 8-0 home win over Sweet Home, the Warriors now prepare for an Oregon West Conference showdown against the Bulldogs.

The two teams tied earlier this season at Woodburn, 1-1, and will play the rematch at 4 p.m. Thursday on Philomath High’s pitch. The winner will control its own destiny in the quest for a league title.

In the most recent OSAAtoday coaches’ poll, Philomath is ranked No. 5 and Woodburn No. 6. Both teams have 6-0-2 records in the Oregon West and the Bulldogs are undefeated at 6-0-3. The Warriors’ lone setback came back on Sept. 9 at No. 1 Gladstone and are 7-1-2 overall.

Philomath wasted no time to take control of Tuesday’s game against visiting Sweet Home. Elizabeth Morales-Marquez scored in the fourth minute with an assist to Bailey Bell. The Warriors then went up 2-0 in the ninth minute on a Sweet Home own goal.

Philomath’s Kamilla Grimmer and K Bacho scored the next two goals to give the home team a 4-0 advantage at the break. Mia Cook assisted on the Grimmer goal and Ella Weickum on the Bacho goal.

In the second half, Morales-Marquez scored her second of the game in the 53rd minute for a 5-0 lead, the assist on the play going to Grimmer. Three minutes later, Weickum scored with an assist to Cook. And three minutes after that in the 59th, Heidi Bacho scored with an assist to Weickum.

The game ended in the 70th minute on the eight-goal mercy rule when Cook scored unassisted.

Sweet Home’s record falls to 1-8-1 overall, 0-7-1 in the conference.
