Philomath High School’s Forestry and Natural Resources Leadership team claimed first place in the team relay at the 88th Oregon Logging Conference on Friday in Eugene.
Competing against other high school teams, the Philomath squad topped the field in the relay, which consists of four events — hose lay, choker set, power buck and crosscut saw.

The victory came down to a clutch moment. Philomath was trailing by three seconds when Mayson Wallace struck the cone squarely with the hose during the hose lay portion of the relay, triggering a five-second bonus that proved to be the difference and pushed the team into first place.
Wallace was joined on the winning relay team by Elizabeth Hamlet in choker set, Trenton Riley in power buck, and Caleb Babcock and Jacoby Babcock on the crosscut saw.
A second Philomath team also competed in the relay with Jude Wilson in hose lay, Nate Bennett in choker set, Tyler Smouse in power buck, and Emma May and Emmylou Cook on the crosscut saw.

I’m so proud of young men and women on the Philomath High School Forrestry and Narural Resorces team! Way to go team!
