The Philomath High School boys basketball team had a final tuneup before getting into conference play with a 74-14 rout Wednesday night over visiting Rainier. The Warriors can now turn their attention to the Oregon West Conference with Cascade scheduled to visit on Friday.

Philomath will enter the matchup against the Cougars riding a three-game winning streak with an overall record of 6-3. The Warriors have won each of those last three contests with double-digit margins of victory.

Cascade, meanwhile, will come into the game for its first action since Dec. 22. The Cougars, 7-2 overall, were scheduled to play Valley Catholic on Wednesday but the game was canceled. Cascade is also on a three-game winning streak.

Both teams are highly ranked — Cascade at No. 2 in the OSAAtoday coaches poll and No. 6 in the OSAA computerized rankings, and Philomath at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively.

In Wednesday night’s game against 3A Rainier (2-5), Philomath ran away with it early by taking a 49-2 lead by halftime. The beating eased a bit in the second half with the Warriors taking advantage of an opportunity to get their bench players some time on the varsity court.

Junior Ty May scored 16 points with 10 of those in the first half. May’s total included three 3-pointers. Cole Matthews, Chad Russell and Jacob Peters all hit double digits in scoring as well.

Matthews finished with 11 — all of those points coming in the second quarter and nine of them on a trio of 3-pointers. Russell scored 10 on five field goals, eight of those points in the first quarter. Peters also had five field goals for 10 points with his spread out more over the course of the game.

Every player that saw action for Philomath scored at least two points.

Senior Kenney Tripp scored nine of Rainier’s 14 points.

Friday night’s Philomath-Cascade game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
