The Philomath High School boys basketball team extended its winning streak to open the season to four games with a 59-44 road victory over Stayton.
The Warriors led by just two points at the end of the first quarter but went on a 20-7 run in the second quarter to take control. Philomath was able to maintain its 15-point margin at the final whistle.
Philomath (4-0) had fairly even scoring in the first half with seven players contributing points. The Warriors put on a free-throw shooting clinic by hitting 12 of 13 in the first and second quarters combined. Senior Mike Lundy was responsible for half of those with a 6 for 6 performance at the stripe in the first half, 9 of 11 for the game.
The two teams were whistled for a combined 37 fouls and both teams did well at the free-throw line with Philomath hitting 81% (17 of 21) and Stayton successful on 75% (9 of 12).
Sophomore Ty May had a game-high 17 points on seven field goals and 3 of 5 free throws. Lundy finished with 15 points on three field goals and all of those free throws that he sank. Sophomore Chad Russell had eight points in the game with four coming in the first quarter.
Junior Gabriel Wigginton scored 16 and junior Jacob Axmaker had 14 for the Eagles (2-3).
Philomath will hit the road Tuesday for a jaunt over to Newport. The Cubs will bring a 1-3 record into the game.
