The Philomath High School boys tennis team swept through North Marion, 8-0, on Friday afternoon but not without a pretty good battle at No. 1 singles.
Philomath sophomore Dawson Beckstead remained unbeaten for the season with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 victory. It was the only match of the day to go the full three sets. In fact, it was one of only four matches with North Marion’s competing with a small roster.
Philomath wraps up its first week of the season with a 3-0 record.
Andrew Leonard won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Teddy Benbow was the winner at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Warriors won at No. 4 singles by default.
Dylan Bell and Nick Stucki had no problems at No. 1 doubles by defeating their opponent, 6-1, 6-0. The other three doubles matches all went to Philomath by default.
The girls, playing on the home court, went to 3-0 but had a more competitive match on their hands, pulling out a 5-3 win. The Warriors won three of four singles matches. Bailey Bell (6-0, 6-1), Sierra Johnson (6-1, 6-2) and Nadia Durski (6-0, 6-2) all won their matches.
Atira Fairbanks and Chloe Jurva continued to steamroll opponents with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Lily Schell and K Bacho were also unchallenged in a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Philomath’s three losses came at No. 2 singles, and No. 3 and No. 4 doubles. Two of those losses came on tiebreakers, which were played instead of a third set.
The Warriors will see the court again on Tuesday against Molalla — the boys at home and the girls on the road.
