Philomath High School’s bid to reach the 4A state playoffs this season fell one win short with a 14-1 play-in game loss Friday at Scappoose.

The Indians (19-6) took control early by shooting out to a 9-0 lead through the first two innings. The Warriors (13-12) got on the scoreboard in the third but Scappoose’s attack was relentless with the game ending in the fifth on the 10-run rule.

The Indians had 11 hits in the game and also took advantage of three miscues in the field by Philomath. Scappoose freshman Ella Casey went the distance with a three-hitter that included two walks and eight strikeouts. Sophomore Sophia Boyd had a double and home run to lead her team offensively. Boyd’s homer was a solo shot in the third.

The Warriors scored their run on a one-run single to left-center by freshman Haylie Smith with one out in the third inning. Senior Kaylie Kohler, who had a single to get on base, scored on the play.

PHS freshman Rylee Martin hit a two-out single in the fourth for the team’s other hit.

Smith and senior Laighla Hockema both saw time in the circle for PHS.

The Warriors finish the season with their first winning record since the shortened, COVID-impacted 2021 campaign when the team went 8-5.
