Philomath High School’s softball team opened Oregon West Conference play Monday with a 7-1 victory at Sweet Home.
Sophomore pitcher Hailey Smith threw a three-hitter and struck out 14 as the Warriors improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Warriors jumped on the home team in the second inning on a one-run double by junior Riley Mason and one-run singles by senior Emma May and sophomore Rylee Martin. A run also came in on a ground ball put into play by freshman Aniya Jaques.
Philomath added two more runs to its lead in the third. Junior Sierra Skaggs singled and later came around to score on the throw when Smith singled to center. Mason followed with a double to drive in Smith for a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors scored their seventh run in the fifth inning on a one-run single by junior Haley King.
Mason went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs and Smith was 2 for 4 with two runs.
In addition to the three hits allowed and 14 strikeouts, Smith’s stat line in the circle included no earned runs and three walks. She threw 106 pitches in the complete-game performance.
Philomath’s next game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at home against Stayton.
