Wrestling in her first high school tournament Friday at the Warrior Classic, Philomath freshman Sarah Robertson walked off the mat to celebrate with her family following a pin in 2 minutes, 37 seconds over Junction City’s Haley Fauver.

The victory occurred in the championship match of the 130-pound weight division.

Philomath’s Riley Barrett on a mission to win another state title

In a dominating performance Friday in front of the home fans at the Warrior Classic, Philomath High junior Riley Barrett added another page to an impressive scrapbook with three technical fall victories in the 157-pound weight division. The championship match went to Barrett by a 17-1 count over Josh Berry, a Junction City senior who…

“I like how physical it is and it’s really fun, especially when you win,” she said when asked why she chooses wrestling as a sport. “I thought today was really good. I really liked the competition and how I feel after (winning).”

Robertson advanced to the championship match after pinning Willamette’s Olivia Klopp in 1:57.

On the mat, she’s still developing a repertoire of advanced moves but she does have a few favorites.

“I really like cradles — that’s the No. 1 thing,” she said. “And some half nelsons.”

Robertson comes from a wrestling family. Her dad, Jeremy, has been running the Philomath Mat Club in recent years.

“Growing up, I wrestled boys,” she said, adding with a smile, “And I beat them and that was the best thing ever.”

Robertson was just one of two PHS girls wrestling in the tournament Friday but both performed at a high level. Freshman Addison Liddell won two of three matches and placed third at 155 pounds. In the medal match, she pinned Crescent Valley’s Maya Hatten in 1:50.

Willamette won the team title with Junction City finishing runner-up. In all, the tournament featured wrestlers from eight schools.

The schedule shows Philomath’s girls next competing on Dec. 20-21 at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff.
