Sophomore Sammy Hernandez won the high jump and junior Bryce Hruska swept both hurdles events to highlight the Philomath High’s appearance Wednesday at a tri-meet in Newport.
Hernandez cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in a personal-record performance in the high jump, a mark that ties for eighth-best in the school’s record book. Only three other PHS high jumpers have cleared 6-2 or higher this century — Adrian Bowman, Luke Whiteman and Micah Matthews.
Hruska won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.64 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 43.37. Hruska’s win in the 110s was by one-hundredth of a second over a Cascade athlete.
Philomath took a limited roster to the midweek meet with several varsity athletes staying home, coach Joe Fulton said.
Elsewhere for the boys, junior Kaden Howard was third in the 100 meters in 11.44 and second in the high jump at 5-8. Freshman Braeden Colvin was third in the 400 in 57.03 and freshman Milo Morrison placed third in both distance events, running 5:17.51 in the 1,500 and 11:28.88 in the 3,000.
