For the third time in the past four games, Philomath’s girls basketball team held an opponent to 15 points with the latest victory coming Monday evening at Newport. The Warriors beat the Cubs, 64-15, to remain unbeaten in the Oregon West Conference.

Philomath (15-3 overall, 6-0 Oregon West) shot out to an 18-1 lead by the end of the first and quarter and was up 27-6 at halftime. Heading into the fourth, the visitors were ahead 51-12. Newport (3-14, 1-5) had just four baskets in the game with the rest of its points coming on foul shots.

Freshman Reagan Heiken had top-scoring honors with 14 points on seven field goals, a performance that included a 71% shooting percentage. Three other players each had 11 — junior Zoee Howard, sophomore Emily Taunisila and junior Anneka Steen.

Howard drew fouls to get to the charity stripe and she sank 5 of 6 as part of her scoring total. Taunisila and Steen each had three 3-pointers. Junior Mica Boynton also had a 3 in the fourth.

The Warriors swept the season series over the Cubs by a combined score of 129-40.

Philomath, which is No. 3 in both the OSAA rankings and in the latest OSAAtoday coaches poll, will host North Marion at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Warriors beat the Huskies, 61-26, in their first meeting on Jan. 23.
