Philomath’s Les & Bob’s D1 summer baseball team opened play on Wednesday evening at the high school’s Terry Stephenson Field with a 13-3 win in a game stopped in the fifth inning on the 10-run mercy rule.

Four players had two-hit performances at the plate and coach Levi Webber used five different pitchers in the victory.

Philomath scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take immediate control of the contest. Mason Stearns singled, Alek Russell walked and Ty May was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Jake Williams then took one for the team to drive in the summer’s first run. John McCombs followed with a line-drive single to center field. Russell and May scored on the play and McCombs moved up to second on the throw from the outfield.

Chad Russell brought in another run with a hard ground-ball single. Logan Carter followed with a double to center field to score Chad Russell, who had moved up earlier in the at-bat by stealing second. McCombs also scored on an error by South Albany’s catcher.

In the third inning, Philomath made it 7-0 with another run scored. Kash Linsey doubled in Carter, who had reached base on an error.

After South Albany scored three runs in the fourth, Les & Bob’s came back in the bottom half and got those runs back on a single hit. Stearns walked, David Griffith singled and Alek Russell was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs for May. The junior-to-be for the Warriors doubled on a line drive to left field to clear the bases for a 10-2 lead.

Williams made it 11-2 with a double to easily plate May, but he was out at third trying to stretch it to a triple. Chad Russell hit a double to drive in McCombs and then later scored himself on an error.

Stearns, McCombs, Chad Russell and Linsey each had two hits for Les & Bob’s. May had those three RBIs with Williams and McCombs each driving in two.

On the mound, Griffith, Brayden Shenk, Connor Harms, Linsey and May combined on a one-hitter.

Philomath (1-0) is scheduled to play Monday at home against Sweet Home.
