The Philomath High School boys cross-country placed six runners among the top eight in a dominating performance that easily won the Country Fair Classic on Saturday.

Senior Ben Hernandez ran his fourth sub-17-minute race of the season and was the individual winner of the meet, which was staged at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds near Veneta.

The Warriors had a 1-2-3 finish with Hernandez, senior Mateo Candanoza and freshman Leo Pausch. Hernandez came in at 16:41.1, followed by Candanoza at 16:51.9 and Pausch at 17:31.9.

Senior Brody Bushnell placed sixth (18:08.3), senior Jesse Erickson was seventh (18:15.5) and senior Kellen Houchin took eighth (18:15.8) as the Warriors finished with 19 points in the 13-school field. Runner-up North Bend had 113 points.

Freshman Lukas Hernandez completed the varsity lineup and placed 15th (18:52.1). There were 102 runners in the varsity race.

The JV boys also won the team title with sophomore JJ Lewis finishing third individually.

The Philomath girls did not compete in the meet.

The Warriors will now take a break for some fun at what’s being called the Ragtag Relay on Wednesday at the Middlefield Golf Course in Cottage Grove. The competition, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., will feature four-person coed relay teams in a format devised by Cottage Grove coach and former PHS runner and Philomath Middle School coach Ricky Knutson.
