The Philomath Community Christmas Tree Lighting event is scheduled to run from 6-7 p.m. Friday in front of Philomath Museum.
The centerpiece moment of the evening is the lighting of the tree with community members typically taking part in a countdown to the moment of illumination.
Hundreds of people traditionally show up for the event to welcome in the holiday season. The celebration at the museum site dates back to 2007. A temporary tree was put in place for the inaugural event but a year later, the giant sequoia that remains was planted.
An appearance by Santa Claus is a highlight for the little ones in attendance. The Philomath Frolic and Rodeo queen accompanies Santa and hands out candy canes. Lil Knight, mascot for the Corvallis Knights summer baseball team, is also scheduled to make an appearance.
Shonnard’s Nursery provided new holiday lights for the tree this year and is selling the old lights as ornaments for $7 each or three for $15 with proceeds to be donated to local charities and nonprofits. The lights being replaced were displayed on the tree annually from 2008 to 2023.
Free cocoa, doughnuts and cookies will be served.
The event is hosted by the Philomath Area Chamber of Commerce.
