The Philomath High School wrestling team made its first home appearance of the season on Thursday with duals against Gladstone and South Albany.

The Warriors were winners against both opponents — 54-16 over Gladstone and 54-15 over South Albany.

Forfeits played heavily into the team scoring in the Gladstone dual with only five bouts that took place on the mat. In those matchups, the Gladiators had a 3-2 advantage. The Warriors scored 42 points on seven forfeit wins.

Blaise Pindell had an impressive victory at 182 pounds by defeating his opponent on a pin in just 10 seconds. Connar Kohn took twice as long — 20 seconds — to stick his opponent for a victory at 220.

Eleven athletes saw action in the South Albany dual with the only forfeit coming at 182 with Pindell. Neither team could put athletes on the mat at 106 and 113.

Philomath won eight of the 11 bouts vs. the Redhawks and all of those victories came on pins. Ben Hernandez at 120 and Blake Niemann at 126 both had first-period pins in 21 seconds and 1:16, respectively. Chase Ringwald dropped a tough one at 132 on a 5-4 decision against Kellen Hanson.

Caleb Blackburn downed his opponent in 3:14 for the win at 138. David Griffith at 160 went into the third period against his counterpart before ending it on a pin in 4:33. Jake Williams was a winner in 1:51 at 170.

Isaiah Blackburn ended his 195-pound bout early against his opponent with a win in 36 seconds. Kohn had a pin in 1:15 to defeat his foe at 220 and finished as the only PHS wrestler to win twice in actual bouts. Joseph Choi at heavyweight pinned his opponent in 49 seconds.

Several exhibition matches were also arranged against South Albany wrestlers. Philomath won six of the seven extra bouts. The closest of those matches involved another heartbreaker for Ringwald in an 11-8 loss by decision.

Philomath will not see the mat again until next week but the slate gets busy with competitions on June 1, June 2 and June 3. First up will be duals at Elmira against the host school and Siuslaw. The next day, the Warriors will head to Junction City to dual the Wildcats along with Stayton. And on June 3, PHS will battle at Sweet Home for duals against the Huskies, Marshfield and Cascade.

The next home appearance is scheduled for June 10 when Banks, Estacada and Tillamook visit the PHS gym.
