The Philomath High School softball team won its third straight game by escaping Country Christian in Molalla with an 11-10 victory on Wednesday.
The Warriors (4-2) erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to turn a 6-5 deficit into an 11-6 lead. The Cougars (4-3) responded with four runs over the final four innings while holding Philomath scoreless to make things close in the end.
Country Christian pulled to within 11-10 on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. PHS sophomore pitcher Hailey Smith ended the game, however, with a strikeout looking.
Warriors sophomore Libby Kramer went 2 for 4 with a double and scored three runs. The team’s other five hits were scattered among five players. Junior Haley King drove in two runs.
In the circle, King started and over 4-2/3 innings allowed six hits, five earned runs and six walks with two strikeouts. Smith pitched the final 2-1/3 innings and gave up one hit, no earned runs and two walks with three strikeouts.
Senior Keeley Dahlgren led the Cougars with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Starting pitcher Adelynn Smith, a freshman, limited Philomath to one hit, no earned runs and one walk with four strikeouts in three innings. Sophomore Kelsey Mulhern pitched the last four innings and allowed six hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
Country Christian had seven errors in the loss.
Philomath is scheduled to host back-to-back home games at Warrior Field to finish up the week. First up will be Molalla at 4:30 p.m. Thursday followed by a rescheduled game against Yamhill-Carlton at 5 p.m. Friday.
