Philomath students in grades 4-12 have an opportunity to share their vision for the city through the 2026 “If I Were Mayor…” contest, an annual program organized by the Oregon Mayors Association.
The contest, which begins at the local level, invites young people to imagine themselves in the mayor’s seat and propose ideas for their community. Submissions are divided into three age-based categories, each with a different format.
Elementary school students in grades 4-5 can enter the poster contest using any art medium including paint, markers, colored pencils or pastels. Middle school students in grades 6-8 are challenged to write essays between 500 and 1,000 words, submitted in Word, PDF, PowerPoint or online essay format. High school students in grades 9-12 can create digital media presentations in video format.
To be eligible, students must either live within the city of Philomath or attend a school in the Philomath School District. All submissions require a completed entry form signed by a parent or guardian for students under 18.
Local winners in each category will receive certificates and special recognition during a spring City Council meeting. They’ll also enjoy unique experiences including a day with Mayor Christopher McMorran, a fire engine ride, a police escort and a commemorative gift.
The top local entries will advance to the statewide competition, where first-place winners in each category can earn $500 prizes. Second- and third-place statewide winners receive $300 and $100, respectively. State winners will be honored at the Oregon Mayors Association’s summer conference awards luncheon in Baker City, scheduled for Aug. 14-16.
Entry forms and additional information about the contest are available on the city’s website. Local submissions must be turned in to the city by March 16, with winning entries forwarded to the Oregon Mayors Association by April 1.
