The Philomath High School girls soccer team opened Oregon West Conference play Thursday with an 8-0 victory at Sweet Home.

The game was stopped in the 60th minute on the eight-goal mercy rule.

“We played really well together and executed a lot of things we worked on this week in practice really well,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said.

Philomath (2-2-1 overall, 1-0 Oregon West) took control early with two goals within the first 10 minutes. Senior Isabel Morales-Marquez had both goals on shots in the second and ninth minutes with assists by sophomore Jordyn Hood and freshman Kya Bolton, respectively.

The Warriors then scored three goals over a six-minute stretch from the 24th to 30th minutes. Senior Sophia Bauer found the net with an assist by junior Ellie Dye for a 3-0 lead. Sweet Home (0-5, 0-1) then knocked the ball into its own net on a shot from Dye for another Warrior goal. The team’s fifth goal came on a shot by Bolton with an assist to senior Charis Bumstead.

In the second half, senior Kateri Pindell scored twice — in the 49th minute unassisted and in the 54th minute with an assist by Bolton. And in the 60th minute, the game ended on a Bauer goal with an assist to senior Petra Hernandez.

Philomath’s next game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at home against Stayton (1-3, 0-1).
