The Philomath High School girls basketball team worked through a slow start Tuesday to defeat Sweet Home on the road, 50-25.
The Warriors improved to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the Oregon West Conference. The team will not play again until Feb. 17 with a trip to Cascade. A game originally scheduled for Friday against North Marion was canceled with the Huskies not putting a varsity squad on the floor this season.
Sweet Home (7-9, 1-4) led 13-9 after the first quarter with sophomore Taylor Gaskey hitting a couple of 3-pointers. Philomath started to find more success getting the ball in the hoop in the second quarter and while holding the home team to just a single free throw with no field goals. By halftime, the Warriors had gone up, 22-14.
Philomath didn’t really find its offensive stride until the fourth quarter when the Warriors shot 72.7% from the field. Junior Reagan Heiken scored nine of her game-high 13 points in the second half. Sophomore Reagan Nuño finished with nine and both junior Jordyn Hood and junior Annaleise Brown added eight.
Sophomore Libby Kramer scored all seven of her points in the fourth, a stretch that included a 3-pointer. Hood also had a trey in the final frame.
On the boards, Heiken had seven, Kramer finished with six and senior Shaylee May had five. Heiken also had five assists. On defense, May, Hood and Nuño each had four steals and Brown finished with four blocked shots.
Junior Aaliyah Brown led Sweet Home with 11 points.
