In a girls soccer battle for first place in the Oregon West Conference, Philomath and North Marion played to a 2-2 tie Tuesday. The Warriors and Huskies are tied atop the standings with 3-0-1 records.
The Warriors led 2-0 at halftime on goals in the 17th minute by senior Isabel Morales-Marquez and in the 29th minute by freshman Kya Bolton. Senior Aspen Russell had the assist on the first goal (the assist on the second goal was not immediately available).
“We played a great first half — really good defensively,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said. “We got disconnected at times in the second half but still played hard and had chances at the end to win it.”
North Marion pulled to within 2-1 in the 50th minute on a goal by junior Bethany Dunn. The Huskies scored with an element of luck on the play when Philomath’s goalkeeper had a miskick on a slippery field, Phelps said, which left Dunn with an open shot in the box.
The Huskies (4-3-1 overall) scored again in the 65th minute to tie the score with junior Paige Comerford finding the net.
Although third-place Newport may be a factor down the stretch, the second meeting between the two schools at Philomath on Oct. 24 could decide the conference title. The Warriors (4-2-2 overall) will face the Cubs at 4 p.m. Thursday on the PHS pitch.
