PHS volleyball team celebrates

The Philomath High School volleyball team dominated in the comforts of its own gymnasium Friday night with a 25-4, 25-11, 25-17 victory over winless Woodburn. It was the first appearance this shortened season for the Warriors in the PHS gym.

The Warriors controlled the match from the start against an overmatched opponent that has won only two of 23 sets this season. Philomath capitalized on the opponent’s serve-receive issues and finished with 14 aces on the evening.

Junior Ashlynn Barron had a solid performance with nine kills and .316 hitting efficiency to go along with four aces and five digs. Sophomore Abigail Brown had seven kills, .308 hitting efficiency and a solo block. Sophomore Maddie Fields contributed six kills and .333 hitting efficiency and on defense had six digs.

Philomath’s excellence at the service line included a match-high nine aces by junior Laura Noble. The team as a whole had a 94.4 serve percentage. In the setting department, Noble had 20 assists. Junior libero Taylor Roe had 15 digs.

The Warriors played for the second straight match without head coach Denee Newton and junior Sage Kramer. Juleia Dooley is the interim head coach.

Philomath goes to 1-3 on the season and will continue to tackle an aggressive schedule with a Monday home match against Sweet Home. The team will also play at home Wednesday against Stayton and Friday vs. Cascade.

Philomath’s JV records goes to 2-2 on the season. … Clara Stanley, Alex Tipsword and Ahnika Tryon each had three kills and Lorelei Schell added two in the two-set win. … The Warriors dominated at the service line with 16 aces. … Leading the way individually were Kori Galvan with six aces and Stanley with five. … In setting, Galvan had six assists and Schell finished with four. … Defensively, Melanie Baldwin had seven digs, Stanley had four and Schell had three. … Stanley also had a block. … The JV team is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at home vs. Sweet Home.
