The Philomath High School girls basketball team overwhelmed Rainier on Wednesday evening in its home gymnasium, 62-19. The Warriors will be hoping to see the momentum continue on Friday in their Oregon West Conference opener against Cascade.

In the win over the Class 3A Columbians, Philomath vaulted out to leads of 20-6 by the end of the first quarter and 36-12 at halftime. Senior Sage Kramer played three quarters and scored 21 of her 29 points in the first half.

Junior Reagan Larson was also finding the net with 11 points, a performance that included a trio of 3-pointers.

The Warriors defense allowed just two baskets in the second half. Few fouls were called in the game with a combined 12 — seven by Philomath and five by Rainier. There were only six free throws attempted in the contest.

Senior Kalli Budge scored eight points for the Columbians (5-3).

The Warriors (6-2) will now turn their attention to Friday’s league opener against the Cougars. Two weeks ago, the Cougars were atop the OSAAtoday coaches’ poll and are now No. 2 with the Warriors in the No. 1 position. In the OSAA computerized rankings, Philomath is No. 1 and Cascade No. 3 behind Gladstone.

Cascade brings an 8-1 record into the game coming off a 57-45 victory over Valley Catholic. The Warriors and Cougars have one opponent in common so far this season with both losing to 5A Silverton — Philomath by a 53-42 margin on Dec. 7 and Cascade by a 56-25 score on Dec. 29.

Friday’s game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
