The Philomath High School girls soccer team improved to 8-2-3 on the season Saturday with a 4-1 victory at Newport in a conference game that needed to be rescheduled ahead of the Oregon School Activities Association’s rankings freeze date.
The Warriors are currently sitting at No. 7 in the rankings and are back up to second in the conference standings after Sisters lost 2-0 at Woodburn. Conference champions and two at-large teams will automatically quality for the state playoffs.
In the win over the Cubs, Philomath got out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from senior K Bacho and sophomore Kamilla Grimmer. Junior Elizabeth Morales-Marquez assisted on the first goal in the 12th minute and sophomore Bailey Bell had the assist on the second goal in the 32nd minute.
In the second half, Newport cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 60th minute. But Philomath answered 10 minutes later to go up 3-1 on a goal by Morales-Marquez, the assist going to Bell. Philomath scored its fourth goal in the 72nd minute with Bell finding the net on an assist from senior Ella Weickum.
Newport dropped to 5-8 overall, 3-8 in the Oregon West. The Warriors, 7-1-3 in league play, will end the regular season on Tuesday with a trip to Stayton.
