The Philomath High School girls basketball team opened Oregon West Conference play on Friday with a 54-37 victory at Newport.

The Warriors set the tone from the opening tip-off with a 23-6 lead by the end of the first quarter — a 17-point advantage and turned out to be the final margin of victory.

Senior Abigail Brown had a productive night with 19 points on seven field goals and 5 of 5 on free throws. Brown scored four baskets in the first quarter alone.

Freshman Emily Taunisila had a double-digit game in the scoring column as well with 10 points on four field goals and 1 of 2 on free throws. Taunisila, sophomore Anneka Steen and senior Hailie Couture all hit 3-pointers in the first.

The Warriors (8-5 overall) have now won three straight and five of their last six.

Sophomore Sheala Simmons scored 18 to lead the Cubs (7-6).

Philomath comes home for two games next week. The Warriors will face North Marion on Tuesday and Sweet Home on Friday — both of those games tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
