The Philomath High School girls basketball team opened the Clarke Cochran Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, Alaska, with a 46-17 victory over Haines, a small school with less than 100 students.

The Warriors (7-1) shot out to an 18-3 lead in the first quarter and were up 29-7 at halftime with all 12 players that suited up for the game seeing action in the first half.

“We played good defense,” PHS coach Ben Silva said. “(Reagan) Heiken scored the ball really well at the hoop. (Annaleise) Brown and (Mica) Boynton came in and gave us good minutes with their finishing at the hoop as well. Everybody got minutes and contributed.”

Heiken, sophomore, finished with 18 points after hitting all eight of her field-goal attempts and both of her foul shots. Brown, also a sophomore, came off the bench to score 10 on 5-of-6 shooting.

As a team, the Warriors shot 38.9% from the field (20 of 40 on two-point shots and 1 of 14 on 3-pointers).

Senior Ashlyn Ganey scored five points to lead Haines — all of those points coming in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors will next play Lathrop (1-1), a school out of Fairbanks that has an enrollment more than twice the size as Philomath, at 4 p.m. Saturday. Lathrop opened the tournament Friday with a 61-31 victory over Metlakatla.
