Philomath Fire & Rescue’s open house that is typically held in the fall each year has been canceled, officials reported.

Philomath fire personnel instead plan to participate with the Corvallis Fire Department on a drive-through event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Benton County Fairgrounds.

It’s the second straight year that Philomath Fire & Rescue has canceled the event because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In past years, the event has included things like fire engine rides, a helicopter landing and various types of demonstrations. A health fair was incorporated into the event in recent years.

The drive-through event on Oct. 9 will take place at the Solar Livestock Barn at the fairgrounds. Visitors will remain in their vehicles while driving through the barn to look at fire engines, ladder trucks and rescue rigs, and interact with Sparky the Fire Dog. The event’s safety theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.”
