The Philomath High School tennis team got in one final regular-season match before turning its attention to next week’s district tournament with a trip up to Salem. Facing Class 5A McKay, the Warriors came up short in a 5-3 loss.

Philomath won 12 of 15 matches in tennis duals this season. The Warriors will next head to the Special District 2 Tournament on Monday morning at Molalla High School for early-round matches. The tournament then moves to the Salem Swim and Tennis Club Thursday and Friday.

Against McKay, Philomath split the singles matches and the Scots were able to come away with wins in three of the four doubles matches.

Jackson Rice pulled out the most competitive match of the afternoon with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Lorenzo Bennett. In the No. 4 slot, Johnny Pickett defeated his opponent by a 6-3, 6-3 margin.

Philomath also posted a win at No. 2 doubles with Jackson Holroyd and Osvaldo Garcia-Bazan winning, 6-3, 6-4.

McKay won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Sawyer Ainsworth in his match at No. 2 won the first set, 7-6, but dropped the second 6-0 and then had to retire to give his opponent the win. The Scots won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles.
