The Philomath High School boys swim team qualified for state in five events Saturday at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 Championships at Albany Community Pool.

Junior Lucas Brandt won both of his individual events. In the 100 breaststroke, he broke the district meet record by one-hundredth of a second. (Photo by Tom McLennan)

Junior Lucas Brandt will defend his state title in the 100-yard breaststroke after breaking the district meet record and winning the championship in 1:01.16. Brandt’s time eclipsed the previous mark of 1:01.17 set by Junction City’s Tony Vickery in 2011 and put him more than 2 seconds ahead of second-seeded Carter McGriff of Marshfield (1:03.08) heading into state. Last year, Brandt won the event in 59.73 seconds.

Brandt also qualified in the 200 individual medley, where he won the district championship in 2:03.75 and for state is seeded second behind Newport’s Jahan Eibner (2:00.08).

Senior Cameron McLennan advanced to state in the 100 butterfly, placing third at districts in 59.93 and earning the 10th seed for the state meet. McLennan placed sixth at last year’s state meet in the event with a time of 57.49.

The Warriors qualified two relays that advanced out of prelims and reached the finals. The 200 medley relay team of senior Mason Stevens, Brandt, McLennan and junior Wyatt Coen won the district title in 1:48.91 and will be seeded fourth at state. The 200 freestyle relay of senior Blake Hauck, Coen, McLennan and Brandt finished third but got to state with its time of 1:40.80, which was good for the No. 8 seed.

Other top-six finishes for the Warriors included McLennan  in the 100 breaststroke (third, 1:12.07), Stevens in the 100 backstroke (fourth, 1:06.34), Hauck in the 50 freestyle (sixth, 26.02) and senior Evan Hernandez in the 100 backstroke (sixth, 1:12.69).

The Warriors’ girls team did not qualify any events for state but contributed to Philomath’s strong team finishes at districts. The boys placed third with 175 points, trailing only Stayton (200) and Marist Catholic (195). The girls finished fourth with 113 points behind Marist Catholic (226), Sweet Home (166) and Cascade (131).

Junior Kate Burriel led the Philomath girls with a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly (1:18.15) and a sixth-place showing in the 500 freestyle (6:45.37).

In addition to Burriel’s results, other top-six finishes were freshman Adelina Kowalewski in the 100 backstroke (fourth, 1:13.34), junior Emma Mecham in the 100 freestyle (sixth, 1:04.43) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Kowalewski, sophomore Hailey Smith, Mecham and Burriel (fourth, 1:56.38).

The state championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
